Self-Study is distance learning via computer. Self-study courses may be taken at any time convenient for the student. All grading and feedback is provided by the computer, although self-study classes may include bulletin boards that provide some opportunities to interact with other students or a content expert.
Virtual courses are taught at a set time by a human instructor, but with every student connecting from his regular location. Virtual courses may include some self-study e-learning combined with conference calls, web conferencing, and chat set for particular times. Virtual classes may also include instructor-graded writing or projects as part of the final grade for the course.
Blended courses combine self-study pre-work or post-work with a live lecture, requiring attendance at a particular location. Blended courses allow participants to minimize travel time by shortening the lecture to its essential interactive components, and presenting background information, review, and testing with self-study.
Live lectures are the traditional format of an instructor or lecturer presenting a topic in a meeting room. The computer system is used to register participants, enforce a class size limit, and provide directions for attending the course.
